December CEO Corner

IT’S BEER N BUBBLY TIME!

Happy Holidays to you, our valued member! The New Year is around the corner, so is high-season; which I know all our businesses are excited about.  It felt like the off-season (if we can still call it that) flew by this year.  Not sure about you, but I definitely feel there were no breaks in the action.  But that is also why I love not only my job but your Marathon Chamber of Commerce.  We are always working for you, and seeking new, exciting ways to add value to your membership, and what our impact is on our businesses and community.

Last month you heard me mention our newest event, the Florida Keys Craft Beer & Bubbly Fest.  Well, it is almost here; and we are very excited about our new event.  We are still in need for volunteers, so if you are interested in helping us out for a few hours we would greatly appreciate it.  Our volunteers will receive a complimentary drink ticket for any beer, wine, or bubbly of your choice.  It’s also a lot of fun and all for a great cause.  All event proceeds go to the Chamber’s Scholarship Fund and Fishermen’s Community Hospital’s Foundation.  To volunteer please call or email Rhonda (305-743-5417 / Rhonda@FloridaKeysMarathon.com) and she will get you set up.

If you are interested in purchasing access to our VIP tent please also contact us to secure your space today.  VIP’s receive complimentary food, beer, wine, and bubbly as well as other goodies; VIP tickets are only $60.00/each.  Lastly, just please be sure to stop by Marathon Community Park on December 27th for our event, have some cuisine from any one of the eight food trucks that will be onsite, try some of the 23+ craft beers, wines, and bubblies we will be serving.  Do some shopping, and listen to our live entertainment throughout the day. For more info please find us on Facebook, or type in www.KeysBeerAndBubblyFest.com.

Congratulations again to our newly elected Marathon City Council members; as well as those who ran to be on City Council.  Not an easy endeavor to say the least, and we appreciate everyone’s efforts.  We look forward to working with Chris Bull, Bill Kelly, and Dan Zieg over the next two years, in addition to Councilman Mark Senmartin and Rich Keating.  Looks like a great group that will have some great opportunities to take our City of Marathon to new heights!

The Marathon Chamber Board of Directors, staff, and I are all committed to working for and with you and your staff.  Please be sure to get involved in our beneficial programs; ask questions, and let your Marathon Chamber work for you.  Have a wonderful Christmas and New Year’s later this month; be safe in your travels, and see you all at the Florida Keys Craft Beer & Bubbly Fest on December 27th from 11am-7pm at Marathon Community Park!

September CEO Corner

Dear Marathon Chamber of Commerce Members:

As yet another summer comes to an end, and the fall begins; I can’t help to think about what we have accomplished this year, and what lies ahead.  We have had another record-breaking season, seafood festival, and yes even summer (occupancy, average daily rates, and via bed tax collections)!  Your Marathon Chamber continues to grow and remain a healthy, and active organization dedicated you supporting your needs and success.  We have revamped our Relocate To The Florida Keys website (www.RelocateToTheFloridaKeys.com), offered discounts to members for online social media classes via FKCC, awarded $10,000 in scholarships to Marathon students, and much more.  Looking ahead is also exciting, as we will have two new resorts opening up within the next three to seven months (Faro Blanco Hyatt, Marriott Courtyard).  New customs and immigration services at Marathon International Airport via our Port of Entry in early 2015, and the old Ramada Inn will begin its redevelopment in 2015; and hopefully even more good things to come in the immediate and near future.

This month, you, our valued member will make a very important decision, electing seven (7) new members to the Marathon Chamber Board of Directors.  You will receive your ballots any day now, so please be sure to vote!  The Board is dedicated to representing our business-members, as well as setting the overall direction of your Marathon Chamber of Commerce; therefore your vote definitely counts and determines the leaders you wish to have representing you.

You will also have the opportunity to purchase raffle tickets for our annual BIG RAFFLE CONTEST, which culminates at our Awards Banquet on Oct. 24th at Hawks Cay Resort (save the date please).  Prizes include a luxury vacation of your choice or $2,000.00 cash, $100.00 gift certificates to great restaurants, 2-night stay (plus spa) at Hawks Cay Resort, Marathon Aquarium Encounters experiences, and more.  Tickets are only $25.00 each and benefit our scholarship program; only 600 tickets max will be sold, and with over 8 prizes your odds are very good to win!  Please be sure to contact us anytime to get your tickets before they run out.

Lastly, please be sure to email me any questions for candidates running for local office as our Candidate Forum will take place on Oct. 6th.  We are covering just about every local and county race (Judges, Marathon City Council, County Commission, Mosquito Control, School Board, and US Congress); your input and questions are important to us so please email, fax, drop off, or mail them into me.

Have a great September everyone; please be sure to contact us for any business assistance, needs, etc. you may need.  Our doors are always open and no request is out of bounds.

CEO Corner April 2014

SPRING CLEANING

Another successful Marathon Seafood Festival is in the books!  Thank you to all of our sponsors, supporters, volunteers, staff, organizers and so many others for coming together to ensure our community and visitors experienced an amazing Seafood Festival.

We saw over 22,000 people at the event this year; and more importantly for our businesses, as well as transient and tourist-related business members,  about 75% of event guests were from outside Monroe County.  To better determine exactly how many people came to Marathon/Middle Keys because of the Seafood Festival, we had volunteers conduct over 500 random surveys to event guests. Here is a breakdown of the survey results:

  • Of all (16,990) out-of-county guests 52%, or 7,985 visitors, said they came to Marathon/Middle Keys because of the Marathon Seafood Festival
  • Of the 7,985 that came to the Middle Keys because of the event; 91%, or 7,266, stayed in a Middle Keys hotel, motel, resort, or vacation rental. Translation: visitors are coming to our district because of the event and the vast majority are staying overnight in our district.
  • Of the 7,266 that stayed overnight (because of the event), 30% actually extended their stay for a total of 150 additional nights!

So yes, even though the event is held during high-season, it still attracts thousands of visitors to our destination.  Best of all, many of these “first-time visitors” will come back again due to their positive experience at our event.  Just another reason the Marathon Seafood Festival is so vital to our community and businesses success each year.

One last great statistic is Visitor Spending (of those who only came to our event and stayed overnight for it):

  • 7,266 (out-of-county visitors staying overnight who specifically came for event) x $185.00 (spending/visitor/day) x 4.5 (ave. length of stay) x 1.12 (cir. of monies locally/indirect spending) = $6,774,818 in total visitor spending for 2014 Marathon Seafood Festival!

Switching gears, and looking ahead to spring; moves us into the Marathon Chamber’s fourth annual Business Beautification Program; where our Board of Directors will award ten (10) $1,500.00 beautification grants to local Marathon/Middle Keys business-members.  These grants are for businesses to move ahead with projects that will improve their façade, landscaping, and anything else that improves our Middle Keys corridor and appearance.  The Board is very proud of this program, and we hope you will apply! Keep an eye out for a mailing that better explains this program, as well as an application for you to complete.

Let’s make this spring and the rest of our high season our best yet. Let’s choose to be motivated, innovative, and inspire our staff and customers to be as well.  Have a great April everyone; please be sure to contact us for any business assistance, needs, and any advice you may need.  Our doors are always open and no request is out of bounds.

Most Respectfully,

CEO Corner June 2014

Marathon Chamber Proud to fight and stand up for small businesses

Many of you are frustrated with your BP Oil Spill Claims being stuck in purgatory; and BP’s recent attempt to re-negotiate the terms of its previously agreed upon settlement with businesses affected by the 2010 Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill.  Now, the US Chamber of Commerce is actually taking BP’s side in a recent filing to the US Court of Appeals.  Why would the United States Chamber of Commerce side with a foreign corporation that has already caused so much damage to our environment and our Florida Keys economy?  You can spin it any way you choose. But it appears the US Chamber is more focused on BIG business than what really makes our economy turn.  That is small businesses across America and of course here in the Florida Keys.

As your “Chamber CEO” and strong supporter of what Chambers around the world do for businesses, this is very unsettling.  Our mission is to advocate, support, educate, promote, and empower our business-members.  What the National Chamber is currently doing is siding with one, yes one business-member, at the expense of the tens of thousands of their small and medium size members.  For me this is unacceptable and disappointing; no matter how the National Chamber tries to slice it.

But, I am happy and proud to tell our community and our 500+ members something important. Your Greater Marathon Chamber of Commerce & Visitor Center is NOT a member of the US Chamber of Commerce. We have never been so proud to say that!

We are proud to say that we have done the exact opposite of what the US Chamber is doing.  After the spill we orchestrated and hosted a televised panel-forum meeting with Coast Guard, NOAA, Monroe County Emergency Management, City, State, BP, and other Federal officials and decision makers to answer questions from our residents, business owners, and their employees regarding the spill.  We were also proactive in educating and empowering our business-members about what they can do to file a successful claim. We presented local attorneys at Chamber Luncheons and other chamber-hosted/sponsored events.  These attorneys specialize in filing claims for businesses and employees.

BP’s irresponsible, indeed criminal, and selfish deeds should not be rewarded or supported by any entity that is charged with representing American businesses. It is regrettable that the largest Chamber in the land is doing such a thing.  BUT, on a local level rest-assured that your Greater Marathon Chamber of Commerce and Board of Directors are strong advocates for your business. For your financial health, long term stability and success.

We will continue to fight the good and necessary fight when and as needed.  As the US Chamber sides with big business, the Marathon Chamber sides with you, our Middle and Florida Keys businesses.

UPDATE ON BP CLAIMS AS OF May 20, 2014: BP recently filed suit to stop all payments on claims and renegotiate the settlement agreement; the Eastern Louisiana District Court just ruled to deny BP a hearing. This is a big win for the private sector/businesses seeking claims! BP will either have to re-initiate the claims process or they can appeal to the Supreme Court for a final ruling.  Of course your Marathon Chamber will keep you apprised.

Have a great June everyone; please be sure to contact us for any business assistance, needs, and any advice you may need.  Our doors are always open and no request is out of bounds.

Most Respectfully,

Daniel Samess                                                                                                                                  CEO                                                                                                                                              Greater Marathon Chamber of Commerce                                                                                          (305) 743-5417                                                                                                          ceo@floridakeysmarathon.com                                                                               www.FloridaKeysMarathon.com                                                             www.RelocateToTheFloridaKeys.com                                                 www.MarathonSeafoodFestival.com

CEO CORNER

SEA FOOD, AND EAT IT!

It’s March which means season has arrived and the Original Marathon Seafood Festival (www.MarathonSeafoodFestival.com) is here!  We hope to see you all at Marathon Community Park March 8th & 9th for our 38th Marathon Seafood Festival.  What a milestone!  To think this all started in 1976 with a few local commercial fishermen and their families wanting to throw a little fish-fry for each other.  Now, the Marathon Seafood Festival consists of over 21,000 festival guests, live entertainment and over 200 vendors, along with art booths, and boats.  Please also be sure to visit our brand new (and improved) Marathon Seafood Festival website; done here locally by chamber-members Eye Partner, Inc.  Our new site will even better promote and brand Marathon’s premier event, while providing visitors, locals, vendors, etc. valuable information about the event via their computers as well as smart phones.

The Marathon Seafood Festival brings in thousands of out-of-county guests each year to our Island having a $1,000,000.00+ economic impact each year on our businesses and community.  Relating to economic impact and working with our visitors I am extremely proud of the amazing job the staff in our Marathon Chamber & Visitor Center does; especially during busy times like now.  As some of you may know we have a contract with the Monroe County Tourist Development Council (TDC) to operate our Visitor Center.  It is with their support we are able to operate our Visitor Center so effectively while promoting our local businesses. Some great factoids about your Marathon Visitor Center are:

  • Visitors who stopped in the Marathon Visitor Center extended their stay by an average of three-days; this resulted in total additional visitor spending (includes accommodations) to the tune of $6.2+ million/year!
  • Marathon Visitor Center refers about 250+ visitors/day (includes walk-ins, emails and phone calls) during high season and about 120+/day the rest of the year.
    • = $1.65 Million in visitor spending/year as a result of your Marathon Visitor Center providing visitor information services! Remember this only involves spending on items other than accommodations; such as dining, shopping, attractions, fishing, etc.

To recap: We bring in about $6.2 Million/year in additional visitor spending (visitors who lengthen their stay due to our services) & about $1.65 Million/year in overall visitor spending excluding accommodations.

    • If you include accommodations along with all other spending as well as additional visitor spending, then the annual total for visitor spending via your Marathon Visitor Center is about $13,110,000.00!

By providing quality customer service and quality information about Marathon and the Middle Keys our staff has been able to help visitors extend their stay resulting in additional spending and revenues for local businesses. In addition, our services result in visitors patronizing our local businesses they may not have otherwise thought to visit.

I am extremely honored to have such a talented and hard working staff; both in our Visitor Center and back in the Chamber offices.  We will continue to work hard to show our visitors a great time, as well as for your (local business members) benefit.  Thank you and see ya’ll at the Seafood Festival (March 8-9) in a few days!

February CEO Corner

It’s February, do you feel the love?

Valentine’s Day, hearts, chocolates, jewelry, and other great gifts.  Can you feel the love?  If not, then it sounds like you have some shopping to do, but fret no more!  We have some great stores to frequent to get your special someone that gift you know they deserve, or at least expect.  Places like Cash Flow Jewelry, Midas Touch, Alo Jewelry, DK Style Hut, Uniques by Kennedy Studios, and many more great Marathon Chamber members that offer all kinds of goodies. Of course our two amazing local florists, Marathon Florists and Flowers by J&J.  For more info please visit our website and check out our “shopping” page (www.floridakeysmarathon.com/wheretoshop.jsp).

Now back to business and to feeling another kind of love! The love I am speaking of is packed restaurants, stores, roads, hotels, resorts, salons, gyms, and local events.  This is the love we love here at your marathon Chamber of Commerce, because this means that our local business-members are getting some much needed love in the form of revenues and profits!  Sound shallow, selfish, and maybe a tad impersonal?  I think not, since it is you, our local businesses that make our great community tick.  February represents some of our busiest weeks of the calendar year, and it is vital that our businesses do well, thrive, and prosper.

So, as you drive to work, run errands, etc. and get impatient and annoyed with all the traffic, lines, and waiting; please do remember (and smile) that while we do have to wait a wee bit longer, our businesses and community are thriving and feeling the love.  At least this is what helps me as I drive up and down our fine islands in the Middle Keys. So I figured, if it helps me, why not impart this information onto you?

In closing, have an amazing February, thrive and prosper; and remember to feel the love this February!  The 38th annual Original Marathon Seafood Festival (March 8-9) is just over a month away.  Please be sure to call or email us if you are interested in volunteering, being a sponsor, or even a vendor.
