So, you’ve got your time-off request approved, you’ve saved for weeks, and now you’re ready to plan your vacation to the Islands of Marathon. You’ve already chosen your destination, but where do you go from there?! Never fear, we’ve got a nice outline of how to plan a trip to Marathon!
Step 1: Decide your budget.
First things first, you’ll need to come up with a range of how much you want to spend on what. Marathon has activities and accommodations to cater to any budget, but have an idea on how much you’d like to limit yourself to.
Step 2: Select your accommodations.
Marathon and Florida Keys are subject to an ebb and flow of visitors as we transition from season to season. The height of our season occurs in the winter/spring months between November and March, mid-season is the summer time between June and August, and things slow down in the fall between September and November. You’ll want to be sure to make reservations prior to your visit to ensure yourself a room! Call the Chamber or visit our website for wonderful referrals.
Step 3: Decide how to fill your days.
There is no end to the activities you can do in Marathon. Plan out your activities so that you have the chance to do all of the things you want to do. Pay a visit to one of Marathon’s fabulous attractions: The Dolphin Research Center (at least 1/2 day), The Turtle Hospital (allow for 90 minutes to an hour), Crane Point Hammock Nature Preserve and History Museum (2 hours to 1/2 day), and Pigeon Key Island (2 hours to 1/2 day).
Take some time to kayak or paddle-board through the mangroves by Sombrero Beach. For more of a thrill take to Keys Cable Park for some epic shredding on their wake-board cable systems; rent a boat or a jetski and cruise around the islands and explore from beyond the shore; catch a glimpse of the underwater world on a snorkel or dive charter; try your luck on the water with one of our deep sea or flats fishing captains; or relax on our beautiful Sombrero Beach! Whether you want to do it all or do nothing be sure your vacation plan allows for the right time frames.
Step 4: Get down here and enjoy your stay!
You’ve plotted, planned, and poured over every last detail of your approaching vacation, so when you get down here take the time to enjoy it! Aside from must-do reservations, don’t sweat it if you’re schedule is pushed back 10 minutes, or an impromptu fish feeding takes the place of something else! Enjoy yourself. Enjoy your family. Enjoy your stay.
