Pets for Vets rescues shelter animals, trains them and pairs them as companion animals with veterans suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), traumatic brain injuries, anxiety and depression. The national organization was established in 2009; the South Florida chapter – which includes the Keys – was started in June of this year. “The key to our success will be finding the right animal for the right veteran,” said Jenn Rodzinka, chapter director. “We match the temperament of the animal to the personality and lifestyle of the veteran to create the perfect pairing so that it is long lasting.” The program is of no cost to veterans. Pets for Vets takes care of all the costs associated with the process including training, adoption, spay and neuter services and microchipping. In addition, when the animal is paired with the veteran they come with a welcome package complete with top quality dog food, toys, beds,
crates, leashes, collars and flea/tick medications. The Pets for Vets chapter in South Florida headquartered in Key Colony Beach is an all-volunteer organization, currently served by about 30 good Samaritans. There are 15 chapters nationwide, although the South Florida chapter is the only one in Forida. Rodzinka said she works with vets from Key West to Boca Raton and is working on establishing a second chapter in Central Florida.
