Take Flight

From the myth of Icarus flying too close to the sun to the 15th century drawings of Leonardo Da Vinci’s flying machines, mankind has always been fascinated with the idea of flight. And while aviation in the modern era has made flying an everyday occurrence, there is still the wonder of how tons of metal are able to break free from the chains of gravity and soar high above the clouds.

If the mechanics of flight intrigue you and you’re lucky enough to find yourself in the sunny Florida Keys, don’t miss the upcoming Aviation Day at Florida Keys Marathon International Airport this Saturday, November 21st, 2015. Presented by the Middle Keys Chapter of the Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA), this much-anticipated annual event showcases a range of impressive aviation hardware. Spend the day getting up close and personal with World War II military aircraft (War Birds) as well as modern military planes and drones, plus home-built and light sport aircraft, planes in government service including aeromedical rescue, law enforcement and Coast Guard, and even the Keys’ vital mosquito control.

History buffs will especially enjoy the EAA’s on-site aviation museum. Located at the east end of the airport, the museum houses some of the most treasured aviation artifacts in the Florida Keys, including pieces from WWII.

Admission and parking are free for this day-long event that runs from 9am to 5pm. Hot dogs, hamburgers and refreshments will also be served up for purchase, so don’t miss out on the chance to indulge your fascination with flight!

Florida Keys Marathon Airport is located at 9400 Overseas Highway bayside.
